Redefining Bhutanese Basketball: The 3×3 Revolution

The Basketball Federation of Bhutan (BFB) is driving a strategic shift in the nation’s sporting landscape. By orienting its long-term vision toward the fast-paced, high-energy discipline of FIBA 3×3 basketball, BFB is building a dynamic ecosystem that bridges grassroots youth development with international competition.

For a nation like Bhutan, 3×3 basketball presents a formidable competitive advantage: athletes developed in 3×3 acquire explosive agility, rapid decision-making, and court vision that seamlessly transfer across both 3×3 and traditional 5×5 formats. While basketball already holds a stronghold in the capital, BFB’s overarching strategy aims to democratize the sport nationwide under its “One Dzongkhag at a Time” initiative.

Through a comprehensive Two-Year Action Plan, BFB is laying the foundation to field competitive Men’s and Women’s National Teams and systematically secure qualifying berths in International 3×3 Tournaments.

Strategic Blueprint: Regional Outreach & Digital Integration

To initiate this nationwide movement, BFB launched its regional outreach campaign from August to early September 2026 across the Central Region (C-Region), engaging Dzongkhags neighboring the capital.

Local Qualifying Circuits

Regional qualifier tournaments were organized across seven key administrative districts: Paro Dzongkhag, Punakha Dzongkhag, Haa Dzongkhag, Thimphu Dzongkhag, Thimphu Thromde, Wangdue Phodrang Dzongkhag, and Gasa Dzongkhag where a single participating school earned direct qualification to the main draw by default.

Empowering Grassroots Organizers

Ahead of the regional finals, Mr. Govinda Sharma Head of the BFB 3×3 Committee, Head Coach for 3×3 in Bhutan, and Siliguri-based expert conducted an intensive technical crash course for coaches, School Sports Instructors (SSIs), and university students. Nearly 15 individuals received hands on technical training to navigate and manage official FIBA 3×3 digital management platforms. This empowered trainees with full autonomy to host, manage, and upload officially sanctioned FIBA 3×3 competitions, enabling grassroots hubs to independently register player profiles, track global rankings, and funnel emerging talent into the national pipeline.

Central Region 3x3 Championship Finals

The C-Region initiative reached its grand finale on September 25–26, 2026, at the Thimphu Basketball Center. High school athletes demonstrated exceptional intensity, skill, and sportsmanship before an enthusiastic crowd of over 60 spectators and key dignitaries.

In the Girls’ Division, Ugyen Academy from Punakha Dzongkhag executed a clinical campaign to capture the championship title, while Motithang Higher Secondary School from Thimphu Dzongkhag finished as the runner-up in a hard-fought competition.

In the Boys’ Division, Taktshang Academy representing Paro Dzongkhag emerged victorious, displaying remarkable perimeter shooting and defensive grit to claim the championship. Yangchenphu Higher Secondary School from Thimphu Dzongkhag delivered a strong effort to secure second place.

Dignitaries & Community Impact

The championship ceremony was graced by prominent leaders from the education and sports sectors, underscoring the strong alignment between scholastic education and athletic development in Bhutan:

  • Aum Sangay, Director of the Department of School Education under the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD)
  • Ranjit Shoney

Post-game testimonials from participating student-athletes reflected overwhelming excitement for the fast-paced 3×3 format, with players eagerly voicing anticipation for future editions of the tournament.

What’s Next: Expanding the Footprint

Building on the monumental momentum of the Central Region Championship, the Basketball Federation of Bhutan is preparing for the next phase of its national rollout:

  1. Southern Region (S-Region) Expansion: Deploying the regional tournament framework across southern Dzongkhags.
  2. Eastern Region Phase: Rolling out grassroots qualifiers across eastern districts to ensure complete national coverage.
  3. FIBA Platform Player Tracking: Registering all regional participants onto the official FIBA 3×3 global database to build national player rankings and groom top talent for upcoming international fixtures.

The 3×3 discipline is proving to be a catalyst for youth empowerment, athletic health, and national pride across the Kingdom of Bhutan.

The C-Region 3×3 High School Championship 2026 was funded by Government of India via India Bhutan Foundation initiatives.
