History and Background
Basketball as a sport was popularised in Bhutan in the year 1970’s by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo who was an enthusiastic and extraordinary player of the game in Bhutan. The game was further given a boost with the formation of Basketball Federation of Bhutan (BFB) in the year 1983.
The BFB initiated the Coronation Cup which started in June 1995, founded by the Rams in honour of the Coronation of His Majesty the Great Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, making it the oldest and most prestigious basketball tournament in Bhutan.
Basketball in Bhutan has witnessed significant growth, particularly since the establishment of the Thimphu League (now A-League) in 2013. This marked a turning point for the sport, providing a structured competitive platform for players and teams. BFB has also taken the initiative to take winter coaching and summer coaching to parts of the country and has future plans to take grass root level programs in Bhutan.
The BFB has played a pivotal role in this development. Their initiative to train local coaches in 2013 empowered communities and improved the overall quality of basketball instruction across the country. The deployment of these trained coaches to all 20 dzongkhags (districts) has been instrumental in expanding the sport’s reach and fostering grassroots development. To achieve this, they collaborated with the Ministry of Labor and Human Resources (MOL) to recruit and train a cohort of aspiring coaches.
