The introduction of the Queen’s Cup Tournament is to encourage, identify and nurture talented younger generations of women to participate in basketball. The tournament aims to bring about a sense of accomplishment and boost self confidence of young individuals especially women. The event will not only challenge gender stereotypes and promote gender equality but also demonstrate that women are capable of excelling in athletic pursuit.
The hosting of the tournament also aims to increase the visibility and recognition for women’s basketball as a competitive and exciting sport. This is also to foster teamwork and sportsmanship, to encourage fair play, encourage cooperation and respect among players and team. Featuring five professionally managed clubs, the league’s objective extends beyond local competition, serving as a crucial stepping stone for Bhutanese teams to compete in international arenas, such as the Women’s South Asian Basketball Club Championship.
Ultimately, The Queen’s Cup strives to elevate the profile of women’s sports within Bhutan, fostering talent and creating pathways for future generations of female athletes. This milestone event is said to coincide with Her Majesty The Queen’s birth anniversary, honoring her legacy as an avid and highly skilled basketball player.
